Shopping in Kalkan
If all the wonderful food that you are served in Kalkan has a detrimental effect on your waist line then maybe treating yourself to a new garment at Tailor Yusef is the solution - even if you're still trim after eating out, buying a Turkish shirt or kaftan is a lovely souvenir of your holiday in Kalkan. Situated on the main street in the centre, Yusef will always greet you with a warm welcome and offer you traditional Turkish çay (tea) or coffee whether you decide to buy or not.
Yusef's shop is like an Aladdin's cave full of a range of shirts, skirts, trousers, shorts, kaftans and pashminas in an array of colours and sizes. Most men feel very comfortable in one of the traditional cotton/linen shirts with a small mandarin collar. They come in short or long sleeved designs and in a choice of plain or striped fabrics - but they're not just for gents, they come in a variety of colours and sizes for ladies too.
Yusef will ensure that you chose the best fit and style for your frame - why not take one home for a gift for a friend or relation? They are so reasonably priced - and as with so many shops in Turkey, Yusef will enter into a haggle to give you the best price!
In a similar style to the shirts, you can get lovely kaftans which are ideal for wearing on hot summers evenings both on holiday and at home … and ideal for bed on chilly evenings back home. Again, there is a huge choice of colours to choose from - and they're not just for the ladies, men also find them very comfortable.
Further along the main street from Tailor Yusef is a fantastic jewellery shop named Just Silver. The window displays on hint at the treasures you will find inside. Just inside the door you will find a silver salver piled high with silver rings of all shapes and sizes … stools are place round the table for you to sit at, and gentle sift through the vast array of designs and hopefully something will catch your eye.
All around the shop are display cabinets with row upon row of rings, bracelets, necklaces, charms, brooches and earrings - plain, engraved, set with semi precious and precious stones. You will also find some unusual items such as toothpick holders, pill boxes and other objects. Despite the name, the shop does sell gold jewellery and beads. You will find large dishes filled with rows of beads in every conceivable colour … you feel like you've entered a pirates hoard of bounty when you look around the shop!
The staff, here, are very knowledgeable and helpful - you are more than welcome to just browse and try on the jewellery, but with the selection on offer it would be hard to resist buying something. If there is something you like but the size isn't right, they can alter items there and then - or in a day or so for some pieces. If you're buying an item you can sit and enjoy a glass of elma çay (apple tea) … and again, you can try and strike a bargain on the price.
