Throughout the centuries Istanbul has attracted travellers … from the merchants and traders of old, to modern day tourists; and in 2010 there has never been a better reason to visit this unique city, as Istanbul has the honour of being the 2010 European City of Culture.
This is a year of celebrations for the only city in the world that straddles two continents, and in the run up to 2010 many historic sites and places of interest have seen redevelopment to restore them to their former glory.
From the Topkapi Palace, which was the heart of the Ottoman Empire where the Sultans presided through to the oldest surviving monastery of the Mevlevi order of Sufis – more famously known as the Whirling Dervishes – at the Galata Dervish Lodge, these impressive places of interest are a “must see” on a trip to Istanbul.
Istanbul has put together a calendar of arts, exhibitions and events for the whole of the year and many of these will be utilising some of the wealth of historic sights of the city. With so many things happening, throughout the year, we cannot list all of them but we can give you a taste of some to help you plan the ideal time, for you, to visit Istanbul as some of the exhibitions and shows are not held for the whole year.
